Inspired by her daughter’s frustration with traditional Nutcracker productions, Aspire CEO Kitty Griffin envisioned a holiday experience in which every child could see themselves represented, celebrated, and empowered on stage. After witnessing her daughter struggle to connect with a production that offered limited opportunities within a largely homogeneous cast, Kitty transformed that experience into a bold and inclusive vision: Joy: The Urban Nutcracker.

Returning in 2026, this vibrant reimagining of a holiday classic brings an exciting urban and multicultural experience to the stage through African dance, Salsa, ballet, hip hop, ribbon dancing, live music, theater, and other culturally diverse performances. More than a holiday production, Joy is a powerful celebration of representation, creativity, community, and the extraordinary talent of young performers throughout Contra Costa County.

Each year, the Aspire team is inspired by the confidence, passion, and artistry displayed by its young performers. Through Joy: The Urban Nutcracker, Aspire continues to break down barriers, expand access to high quality performing arts opportunities, honor cultural diversity, and create a meaningful holiday tradition for families across the community.
